PL250: Eclipse Microprofile

Training: DevOps

Participants receive a practical introduction to developing cloud-native applications with Jakarta EE and Eclipse MicroProfile. They learn to develop microservices with Quarkus, deploy them on Kubernetes, and use Docker for containerization. The course also covers monitoring with Prometheus, tracing with Jaeger, and best practices for scalable, containerized applications.

  • Basic knowledge in Design Patterns
  • Basic Jakarta EE knowledge

Description:

Cloud-native applications are becoming increasingly popular due to their numerous advantages such as scalability, flexibility and efficiency. Enterprise Java (or Jakarta Enterprise Edition) is a popular platform for cloud-native applications. It provides a set of standards and APIs that help developers create enterprise applications. The MicroProfile initiative aims to improve the experience of application developers in a microservices environment by providing a basic platform definition that can be implemented by multiple runtimes. MicroProfile is a set of specifications that define how developers can use Jakarta EE to build microservices.

In the workshop PL250 Eclipse Microprofile participants learn how to use MicroProfile and Jakarta EE technologies to develop microservices, deploy them on Kubernetes and create cloud-native applications.
After each presentation of one of the Eclipse MicroProfile specifications, participants get the opportunity to directly try out what they have just learned and gain practical experience. For this purpose, they have access to their own secure virtual development environment that already has the necessary tools pre-installed.
As IDE (Integrated Development Environment) we use IntelliJ Idea Community Edition from JetBrains and take advantage of its numerous support functions for developing Java applications. In this environment, participants develop their own microservices using the web framework Quarkus.
Quarkus is an implementation of the MicroProfile standard and additionally offers numerous functions that support developers in their work to create cloud-optimized services that will be used in a container environment such as Kubernetes.
In addition, participants learn how to use the industry standard for containerization, Docker. They use this to run the service monitoring solution Prometheus and Jaeger Tracing in their development environment in order to gain deeper insights into the operation of their own microservices and to become aware of the necessity of such solutions in productive use.
