LI500: Container Basics with Docker & Podman

Training: Linux/Unix

Linux administrators and system specialists will learn how containers work at the kernel level, with namespaces and cgroups serving as the foundation. Through hands-on lab exercises using Docker and Podman, participants will gain practical experience with images, networking, persistent storage, and container runtimes. The training concludes with an overview of Kubernetes and SUSE™ Rancher.

Agenda:

  • Container – technical concepts and fundamentals

  • Differentiation from virtualization

  • Comparison of container runtimes

    • Docker with containerd, podman, CRI-O,...

  • Installation & configuration of a container runtime engine

  • Images and containers

  • Creating custom images

  • Process management in containers

  • Containers in networks

  • Communication between containers

  • Persistent data storage

  • Shared storage

  • Centralized image provisioning

  • Container orchestration

  • Outlook on Kubernetes

Objectives:

In the training LI500 Container Basics with Docker & Podman participants learn about application virtualization and how to work with containers and images. Practical examples are used to illustrate various scenarios involving the integration of containers into networks, the exchange of data between containers, and the persistent storage of data.

Target audience:

The course LI500 Container Basics with Docker & Podman is targeted at:

  • Linux Administrators

  • Linux Systems Engineers

  • Linux System Specialists

  • System Administrators

Prerequisites:

To be able to follow the learning content and learning pace in the workshop LI500 Container Basics with Docker & Podman effectively, participants should have solid knowledge of Linux system administration, e.g.:

  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)

  • Suse Certified Administrator (SCA)

  • Linux Professional Institute Certificate (LPIC1)

  • or comparable prior knowledge

Description:

The 5-day workshop LI500 Container Basics with Docker & Podman provides Linux administrators and systems specialists with a solid understanding of how containers work under Linux, independent of a specific tool. The course begins with the kernel features upon which every container runtime is built: namespaces isolate processes, mount points, and network interfaces, while control groups (cgroups) limit CPU and memory. Building on this, the course clearly distinguishes containers from hypervisor-based virtualization and compares common container runtimes.

In lab exercises with Docker and Podman, participants put this knowledge into practice: they install and configure a container runtime, work with images and containers, build custom images, and deploy them centrally. Further key focus areas include process management within the container, network connectivity and inter-container communication, as well as persistent and shared data storage. An overview of orchestration with Kubernetes and SUSE™ Rancher rounds out the training. This creates a technology-agnostic understanding that facilitates administration and troubleshooting in container environments and specifically prepares attendees for the advanced Kubernetes courses.

We recommend as follow-up courses:
- LI510 Kubernetes Basics
- LI530 Kubernetes Advanced
- LI560 Kubernetes Security
- LI590 Kubernetes Cluster Management with SUSE™ Rancher
